WHAT NEXT?

‘In his will Uncle Ben left a note,
about his thoughts on the afterlife… I quote:’
*
“During the funeral of a close friend…
I wondered when my life would end.

After I’ve shed this mortal coil…
and my ashes have integrated with the soil.

Is that it? Nothing more…?
Surely there’s something else in store!

There’s a heaven to help some through…
If it works for them - it has value.

Darwin claimed the strongest adapt…
In the human world, that’s very apt.

As the bible fantasy is exhorted constantly…
Why can’t we believe life came from the sea?

Or allow devout people to worship the sun…
They have as much right as anyone.

So many questions, and still no one knows…
With over 2000 religions, uncertainty grows.

Were we deliberately left on this earth alone…
To surmount all obstacles on our own?

Random chance dictates what our life will be…
There’s no kind God to treat us compassionately.

There’s no spiritual power from above…
Prayers are unanswered - no offers of love.

A dismal picture I hear you say…
Not necessarily, I have to relay.

There has to be something to give us hope…
Without that expectation, we couldn’t cope.

Perhaps something’s revealed right at the brink…
At the moment of death to make us re-think

If so how did it all begin…
And where do we fit in?

Scientists say a big bang created the universe…
What triggered that? Their theories get worse!

I know that a power created me…
And I accept that fact most gratefully.

I’ll enjoy life - I won’t be a taker…
I’ll build up credit with my maker.

I believe this to be as good as any creed…
And by helping folk, I’ll fulfil a need.

But please explain before I die…
Where I’m going to - and why?”

*
‘He died peacefully, a smile on his face…
I’m sure he’s found the right place.

He knows why he’s there - and how…
but can’t return to tell me now!’

End.

Joe Thomas – 2007.
